Become a Cavern Diver

padi certification

If you are considering becoming a cavern diver, you will need to complete a scuba diving course. The course includes four dives. The first is an outdoor practice, in which you will learn how to handle line and reel, avoid silt-outs and manage air. Your instructor will teach you how to plan your dive as well as how to keep your orientation and control your air. The course will prepare you to dive in caves.

Safety rules

Cave diving safety protocols follow the Rule of Threes. The cave diver should have three different sources of light and a minimum of two separate tanks, either independently or manifold mounted. They should also separate their gas into three distinct sections in order to have enough to last the dive. If the dive team has experience in diving in caves, a more conservative gas management plan will be preferred. Cave divers should be careful when diving in caves.

Equipment

Cave diving requires special equipment. You should have two safety reels. One should be used for guideline running, while the other should keep the line tension high while the diver is in a cave. Before you go cavern diving, ensure that every diver has a safety rope with enough line to reach cave's entrance. Manufacturers will often pack the reels up to the edge with guideline when making a new reel. This makes them more susceptible to jamming. You should trim about 10 meters (30 feet) of your line before you use it to avoid jamming.

Maximum penetration

TDI offers a cavern divers course. This course is for scuba divers who desire to dive in areas without direct vertical access. This includes diving in caverns and underhangs. Although this is not required in order to participate in a cavern diver course, it will give you the necessary skills to make best use of this area. This course will help you navigate dangerously through the small spaces that are sometimes hidden from your eyes.

Maximum depth

Cavern diving comes with its own limitations. Cavern diving must be avoided at night. Cavern diving requires advanced training, which is not the case for other types. Cavern diving requires that you know your limits and learn basic cave safety procedures. Before diving in caverns, you will need to have had some experience. After that, you are ready to embark on your journey into the cavern diving world!
