Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's scuba community have joined forces to clean up the environment on Earth Day. The cleanup will take places at Point Defiance Boathouse. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This cleanup continues to help marine life and conserve the environment. Participating in the cleanup is a great way for you to promote your business, and also allows you to meet people who love scuba diving.

Organisers plan to bring together kayakers and scuba divers to take out fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Divers will lift the net out of the water using a boat elevator once it is removed. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. The organizers hope the cleanup will preserve our waterways and offer a unique experience for the local community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can participate in a Tacoma SCUBA-based rockfish survey to help save endangered species. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. The survey is open for all divers. No experience or qualification required. The training takes place during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.

WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. The monitoring system of sport fishery tag-recovery monitoring involves five annual releases. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. The survey involves the placement of two coded wire tags within the opercular musculature of these fish to determine individual identification after recapture.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

Commencement Bay is a good place to go diving in the greater Tacoma Area. Volunteer scuba divers brought up 47 pounds of garbage from the water this Earth Day. Octopuses, fishing lines, and glass bottles were among the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center of Highline Community College (MaST) organized the clean-up. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation: Bull sea lion wounded

Tacoma dive group, Washington had the honor of seeing an amazing sight while they were scuba diving. A bull sea-lion had been shot with an arrow by scuba divers. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn, the sea lion's name is after a character on "Vikings", is now his new name. This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

This spectacular sight was witnessed by a Tacoma group of scuba divers in October. It was the first time that the group had ever seen a sea lion on a dive, and they were so excited about it that they gathered in groups with other scuba divers to watch the creatures in action. Observations reveal the playful nature and energy of the lions. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. The pups also like to play with the divers, jumping into the water to give them toys and interacting with bubble streams.
