The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. The buoyancy compensator attaches both pieces to the buoyancy compensator. This creates positive buoyancy at the surface and neutral buoyancy under water. Each component can be separated from the other. Backplate and wings are modular systems. These are great options for divers who aren't certain which type they should get. Listed below are pros and cons of each.
Stainless steel
A stainless steel back plate and wings can be purchased with or without an attached harness. The wings and backplate are made from 316 stainlesssteel. This material is highly resistant against saltwater. It is cut with a CNC machine and polished manually to avoid sharp edges that can prematurely wear the strap. They can also be used in conjunction with single-air-tank or dual air-tank systems. To make storage easier, you can take off the wings and backplate made of stainless steel.

Aluminium backplates weigh more than stainless steel. Stainless Steel backplates are ideal for colder climates where they will decrease the weight that you'll be carrying during your dive. Stainless steel backplates can be adjusted to fit most tanks, unlike lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer can offer weighting advice to help determine what size is best for you. This backplate will also last longer, so you don't have to replace it as often.
Plastic
Although the plastic back plate/wing buoyancy is not ideal, it can still be useful for replacing weight on the weight belt. Jacket BCDs also have features such as pockets and weight integration. The wing and backplate do not have these ancillary functions. These components can be ordered separately. Both are available separately. We'll discuss the pros and con of each. It is crucial to choose the right kind of back plate that suits your needs.
Softpack harness
There are many different types of wings and back plate harnesses. Backplates, wing BCDs, and the most common are both available. They include all of the essential components, such as a harness, backplate, and wing, and allow the user to customize the harness with a range of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs, which are lightweight and flexible, are great for technical divers.

The problem with steel backplate harnesses, however, is their inability to be adjusted. The harness is not meant to be used on single tanks. It can only be used on double tanks with permanent banding. Although the steel harness is the strongest option, it is cumbersome to use while traveling. It can only be used for double tanks. Also, the steel backingplate may not work well on land. Although it can be used with single tanks by attaching adapters this is not recommended.
